We are learning how to open sentences in an interesting way.
Adverbs are one way to open a sentence that will 'hook' the reader and make them want to know more.
A focus in our literacy lessons is learning to create interesting, descriptive sentences.

The whole of Year 3 are looking at diary writing and the features that they include such as writing in the past tense and from a personal point of view.
The students realised quite quickly that the PYP Library is well stocked with some great popular fiction books about diaries. Here are some that the students from Class 3E enjoyed reading to help them understand the genre and features better. As 3D had so much fun thinking of silly speech to match photographs we used the photographs again for a different purpose...... to start our sentences in an interesting way using adverbs!
The children wrote their sentences on white boards and shared their ideas with each other. We had a range of different adverbs being used for each photograph and it was a very enjoyable learning episode. 3E enjoy collaborating in small groups/pairs to share ideas and give constructive feedback to each other about the Big Writing that they have done.
It is really useful to hear feedback from our peers as it helps us understand how to write in an interesting way to keep our audience entertained and informed. 3D had great fun thinking of some imaginative speech to match some silly photographs that we were shown.
We used macaroni pasta tubes as our actual speech marks and commas as they are the perfect shape! We added them into the correct place once we had written our speech out on our white boards to match the images we were shown. Here is an example of a simple 'quick fire' activity to uplevel words thinking of a synonym that means the same thing. Here is a completed 'Big Write' story written by Hamdan in Class 3D. The 'Big write' task allocated was to write a story about crash landing in the rainforest. This was written during Unit 3 - Sharing the Planet where we had been learning about different habitats. He has highlighted in pink (ideally in red if possible) the WOW vocabulary words that he was proud of using in his story. He has highlighted in yellow the powerful punctuation that he has included to add interest and effect. Students are also encouraged (if they have time at the end of the writing process) to highlight any interesting connective words they have used to link sentence ideas together/start a sentence in green. If you use a particularly interesting sentence opening phrase you would highlight this in blue. This is proving to be a really useful tool for students to see and check which interesting writing features they are using within their story writing and which features they can aim to try and use a little more. costumes, costumes and more costumes.......fancy dress fun in our book character costume parade4/8/2016 One of our favourite days during literacy week is the book character costume parade. Even our teachers get dressed up! Here are some pictures from the event: Here are some pictures showing examples of other activities that we enjoyed participating in during literacy week. In Year 3 our focus author was Dr.Seuss. We had great fun decorating all our classroom doors with a Dr.Seuss theme. Here are a few examples: We had lots of visitors coming to our classroom during literacy week. Some of our parents came into school to read stories in our classrooms for which we were very grateful. We had some VIP guests from around our school visit our classrooms to read stories to us. Our VIP guests from within our school included Mr Steven, Miss Tania, Miss Morven and Miss Rachel from our Leadership team. We were also very lucky to have members of the Leadership teams from the other RAKA schools pay us a visit to read stories including Mr Andy Lewis from BC and Mr Matt Tansley from Secondary. We also had some rather scary visitors coming into our classes.........Pirates! If a pirate entered our classroom and 'caught us reading' then we were allocated a special stamp on a record sheet. We all desperately wanted to try and get caught reading as much as we could so we could get the most impressive 'being caught reading' record sheet by the end of the week! |
