We are completing our Inquiry into 2D and 3D shape this week. We are becoming more confident identifying the properties of shapes and know the differences between parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines.
This week in Maths Year 6 have been inquiring about 2D and 3D Shape. We have been identifying the properties of 2D shapes and using appropriate mathematical vocabulary to describe them. We have also had a go at constructing 3D Shapes using straws and blu tack and identified the properties of them too.
Year 6 spent time inquiring into mean, median mode and range. We completed an inquiry into Data Handling involving Smarties in which the student created a tally chart to analyse the smarties colours then represented this data as a bar chart. The students also used their knowledge of Data Handling to analyse the Mean, Median, Mode and Range. This week in Maths we have been focusing on Data Handling and practicing how to interpret data found in bar and pie charts. We also used our knowledge of Data Handling to survey our school to find out more about our Unit 4 Inquiry into Migration. We designed surveys using effective questioning, collected the data and then analysed and presented our data using bar charts and pie charts.
We found out that most people in the school who were expats migrated to the UAE with their family or for their parents to find jobs. This week we have been learning about mass. We have found out that Mass and Weight are different things! We have had the opportunity to investigate measuring items using scales and had a go estimating the mass of items within our classroom. We inquired into Fizzy drinks and how they are not always what they seem. There are many drinks sold in supermarkets that have hidden sugar in them. We inquired into different brands of drinks and found out just how much sugar is in each one! We were very shocked by the results! Year 6 have been inquiring into negative numbers in preparation for our Unit Science experiments. We are increasing in confidence when finding the difference between positive and negative numbers. We have also been practicing reading scales on thermometers. We have been investigating capacity in Maths this week. We know about the different unit units of measure, both metric and imperial and we are currently practicing our estimating skills with bottles of different shapes and sizes. Take a look at our inquiry in action! This week we have been using Mathematical stories to help us understand and use Area and Perimeter in a real life situation. We read through Marilyn Burn's book 'Spaghetti and Meatballs for all' which is a story using area and perimeter to work out how to sit 32 guests for a dinner party. Year 6 spent time collaborating in groups to work out the best seating arrangement only using 8 tables to fit 32 guests and their many demands!
This week marks the end of our number unit inquiring into the four operations. the Year 6 students have been inquiring into a range of ways to solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and algebra involving BODMAS. Students were given the task to show their knowledge of answering different calculations in a variety of ways. Next week we are beginning our inquiries into Measurement!
In year 6 we are constantly trying to find new ways to remember our times tables. Learning multiplication is an important foundation for learning different aspects of mathematics such as division, algebra, long multiplication, and even fractions. For students that don’t have a solid grasp of the times tables, they may find these other areas to be hard to understand as well. If you think about it, you use multiplication in your day to day life. When you go grocery shopping, you often need to compare out the cost of similar items or how much it will cost to get multiple items. If you are cooking and need to make a double recipe you are going to need to know how to multiply and if you are at a store and want to determine what type of discount you are getting you need to learn multiplication. Multiplication and math is used whether you realize it or not almost on a daily basis. 6C have been looking at ways to remember the tricky 8 times table! We found a great video that has helped us over the past week. Do you know of any good ways to remember your times tables? Post a comment and let us know!
