Children in 5A looked at bartering as an introduction to Industry. They enjoyed preparing short plays to demonstrate how people would offer goods and services in exchange for things they need for daily living. These pupils were trying to buy shoes. A corn farmer offered 5 ears of corn; a builder offered to build a storage shed; a sheep farmer offered 2 bags of wool and a fisherman gave 3 fish for a pair of shoes. The children had great fun discussing what would be realistic to offer and they bartered until they agreed an acceptable exchange. They can now discuss supply and demand and how demand can change the market. One community of boys had much lower "prices" than other communities and became very popular. It was a super activity.
We are nearing the end of Unit 3, Sharing the Planet. The students in 5F have been working hard over the past week putting together their 3D models of their chosen biome. They have been researching the components of their chosen biome and looking at the impact biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors have on the sustainability of their biome and the relationship between the two. On Thursday they will be presenting their completed models in class and we are looking forward to the finished projects. Now that the seeds are planted in our Year 5 Eco Garden, it was lovely to have 3 children show what good thinkers they are by suggesting that they make waterproof labels for the garden. When asked why, they informed us that when they had been watering the seeds, the labels were getting wet. The children showed themselves to be knowledgeable, creative and thinkers by using the Internet to find pictures of the crops they are growing and laminating them to make them waterproof. They showed appreciation for their garden and cooperated well with each other to achieve their goal. It was an international effort with the 3 children being from India, Korea and the USA!
Year 6 were inquiring into market research today and the lucky Year 5 children got the opportunity to go and sample their product as well as offering advice for improvement so that the children can make changes before official market day on Thursday. It was good fun and the Year 6 pupils had obviously worked very hard.
