We are striving to be more independent in our learning in Year 6 this term and have been looking at ways to build our literacy skills without the assistance of adult. We have introduced an activity to Year 6 this week called 'comprehension buddies'
What is Comprehension Buddies?
Comprehension Buddies is an activity you can do with a partner. One of you will be in the role of the ‘questioner/helper’ while the other one reads, and then you will swap!
What will I learn?
You will become a thoughtful reader and learn how to ask a variety of questions. These questions will stretch your partner’s brain!
Step1: Choose a partner.
Step 2: Check to see if your teacher wants you to read a specific text. If there is no given text, you may select your own book to read with a partner.
Step 3:Read! Choose a section (a page or a paragraph) for your partner to read. You must follow along.Listen carefully to them, help them in any way you can when they are stuck (get a dictionary, tell them how the word is pronounced, ask them to read the sentence again).
Step 4: Ask a question or two!
Example Questions:
Can you summarise what you have just read? What were the main points?
Who were the main characters?
What would you do if you were him?
When did she leave the house?
Imagine if this happened here? What would…say?
Step 5: Swap!
