What a great experience this trip was for our KG1 children! We visited the local fire station where we got to see how fire fighters help us and all the tools & equipment they use. We got to ride in their rescue cars and wear some of the gear they use while putting out fires. This trip inspired many of the children to maybe one day become fire fighters themselves...
This week we have been going further by exploring the community role-play areas set up in other KG 1 classes. We visited the Fire Station in KG 1 A, the Shop in KG 1 B, the Hospital in KG 1 C, the Airport in KG 1 D and the Builder's Site in KG 1 E. It was refreshing and exciting for the children to visit different classes and have novel experiences. We reflected in our journals about each of the visits to show our understanding. We will continue with the visits next week. On Thursday, January 28th, all KG 1 classes will visit the fire station to observe and learn about the role of Fire men in our community. A letter to Parents was sent home last Thursday. Please ensure these are completed and returned to the class teacher by Monday 25th. In Language, we were introduced to the letter sound 'r'. Our activities were based on this sound such as rainbows, rabbits etc. Please encourage your child to bring in objects that start with the letter sound of the week for Show And Tell. This will help enhance their vocabulary and develop self-confidence. In Maths, we have continued to work on making simple repeated patterns and exploring more complex patterns in the environment. We are also working on recognizing numbers and our counting skills. During our KG 1 Assembly, the builder visited us and explained all about his role in the community. Please scroll down to view photographs of the special visit. We had a builder visit us during the KG 1 assembly. The builder was actually Mr.Paul Taylor, teacher at RAK Academy, dressed up as a builder. The children immediately named him "Bob the Builder". Bob the builder explained the role of builders, what he needs to wear to do his job, the tools he needs to use and how he helps us in the community. He used his drill, hammer, screwdriver, nail and screw to fix a broken book shelf. He talked about safety when using tools and when working in a building site. We know now that we must wear hat and a special jacket when working. The building site must also be cordoned off with tape, cones and warning signs to let us know to stay safe! Thank you Bob the builder for paying us a visit and showing us how you help us by doing your job well. What a fabulous time we had when a couple of professional and experienced chefs visited KG 1 to enrich our learning experience during this unit. In the picture below, is Heba's mummy, a parent from KG 1 Yellow and her colleague who volunteered to come visit us at RAK Academy. During our Assembly, they talked about and demonstrated their expertise in cooking and baking. We had a good look at the variety of important tools they need to use to do their jobs and watched them work with precision and care. They demonstrated how to make delicious mouth-watering brownies!!! After the visit each class reflected about what they learned in their journals through drawings. We know now that Chefs are people who help us in our community! Listen to the "Pat a cake" song and sing along Now listen to the "I'm a Chef Today" song and sing along A Happy New Year to all our families and welcome back to school! We would like to wish our students and their families a successful 2016! This week, we are back full swing into exploring and learning in our classes.
In Language, we reflected on our long holiday and talked about all the fun things we did with our families. We drew pictures of our holiday and described them to our teachers and friends. We learned the letter sound 'h' for heart, hippo, house, helicopter etc. we also revised the letter sounds introduced so far. We read stories that emphasized the letter sound 'h' such as The Little Red Hen, Hungry Hen etc. In Maths, we have been learning to make simple repeating patterns with Fruit counters and other resources. We continue to work on number recognition and counting to 5 and 10. In our Unit of Inquiry this week, our focus was on the role of the chef in our community. We had the pleasure of inviting a couple of chefs for a demonstration during the KG 1 Assembly. Following the visit, each KG 1 class made their own Chefs' hats and baked actual cupcakes or brownies in the school Food technology room. They also pretended to be little chefs baking cupcakes and all sorts with play dough. We reflected in our journals about the chef's visit and the baking activity as well. You can see pictures of the children in their hats and baking in the UOI section of the blog. Go to UOI Info/ How We Organize Ourselves to see the pictures. Next week, we will have a builder visit us and share with us the importance of their job in our community. Watch this space for more information! Have a splendid weekend! The KG 1 Team |
